Hi! My name is Pam Brown, and Iām a multi-faceted writer, activist, and wellness entrepreneur living in Brooklyn, NY. I earned my undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Dartmouth College and pursued an MFA at Columbia University's Film School. My academic journey continued with a Master of Arts in Media Studies from The New School and a Master of Arts in Sociology from The New School for Social Research.
My activism journey began in Los Angeles during the buildup to the Iraq War, where I joined African American Women United for Peace & Justice. A significant turn in my activism occurred in 2011 with the Occupy Wall Street movement. I was a founding member of the Occupy Student Debt Campaign and the Strike Debt initiative, driving pivotal projects like the 1TDay campaign, which significantly influenced the student debt forgiveness conversation, and the Rolling Jubilee campaign that eliminated millions dollars in medical debt. I also co-authored impactful works such as the Debt Resistors Operations Manual and Shouldering the Costs, examining the impacts of debt on Hurricane Sandy victims.
My writings have appeared in publications like SocialText, South Atlantic Quarterly, Tikkun, and In These Times, and platforms like Stanford University's Arcade, AlterNet, and the Militant Research Handbook. I've also been featured in media outlets including Democracy Now!, Up with Chris Hayes, The Laura Flanders Show, and The Big Picture Show with Thom Hartmann.
I've contributed to Acronym TV's Resistance Report, produced its pilot for Free Speech TV, served on the board of The Brecht Forum, been a columnist for Tidal Magazine, and co-hosted the WBAI/Pacifica Radio Morning Show.
I have served as an adjunct professor of sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and The New School, where I taught the Sociology of Debt. I traveled to Occupied Palestine with fellow filmmakers and activists to document Palestinian organizing for liberation and resistance to ethnic cleansing and apartheid.
In addition to my activism and writing, I co-own Align/WELL, a wellness company dedicated to expanding access to research-based well-being information and strategies.
